KINGSPORT — A pre-race downpour Friday evening foreshadowed the storm to come as some of the tightest racing action this season at Kingsport Speedway also spawned a couple of the year's biggest crashes.

Knoxville racer Chad Finchum started on the pole for the first of two Twin-35 Late model features, and never had a serious challenge for the lead as he led flag to flag to earn his first win of the season.

The race got off to a bumpy start for the division's previous most recent winner, however, as Zeke Shell got spun on the first corner by Justin Fontaine, and was relegated to restart at the rear of the 22 car field. Second place qualifier Lee Tissot fell out with carburetor problems on the 7th lap, while points leader Kres Van Dyke moved up for a second place finish.

After his lap one incident Shell was a man on a mission, and worked his way back up to a top-3 finish, ahead of Ryan Stiltner and Ronnie McCarty in fifth.

There was a three car inversion for the second Twin-35, putting Shell on the pole. He seemed to be on his way to his second win of the season. But, while racing in heavy traffic on lap 18 Shell turned the Allen Hawkins entry in turn four to bring out the caution.

Shell maintained the lead at that point, but as they say, cautions breed cautions and there were several more to come. On one of those restarts Van Dyke used the outside lane to take the lead frm Shell. At the same time Finchum running in fifth was being held up by a side-by-side battle for third between Stiltner and McCarty.

Finchum and McCarty tangled in turn 4, and Finchum literally drove over McCarty's hood. Finchum would soldier on to finish 5th, but McCarty's night was done.

On a subsequent restart Shell's hopes of regaining the lead for a second victory of the season were dashed. Racing to the outside of Van Dyke, Shell's car shot up to the wall. He saved the car, but lost about six positions.

Meanwhile Tissott, with his carburetor now repaired, avoided the calamities and moved up to finish second behind Van Dyke. Stiltner was third ahead of a season best finish for Tyler Goodwin in fourth and Finchum in fifth.

Alan Rich led flag to flag to take the win in the caution free 30-lap Street Stock feature.

It wasn't incident free, however as Steve Sims, who appeared on his was to an easy second place finish, tangled with the lapped car of Danny Casteel. Sims lost his momentum, as well as five positions, and showed his displeasure by running Casteel down to the inside wall.

Rob Austin finished second ahead of Nick Cole, Jared Broadbent and Chris Tunnell.

Keith Helton, driving the Jimmy Hilliard owned car, traded the lead back and forth throughout the 25-lap Pure 4 race. Helton survived contact on the front stretch with the lapped car of B.C. Penley, although Penley hit the outside wall hard, bringing out one of the night's several red flags.

Jon Pittman, ahead of Bruce Crumbley and David Trent.

Kirby Gobble won the Mod 4 20-lap feature ahead of Rocky Yates, Dennis Arnold, Duke Bare and Billy Duty.

Michael Jeter won the Rookie Pure 4 20-lapper James Deese, Brandon Crumbley, Andrew Hill and Craig Phelps.
