"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." — Proverbs 3:7-8 (NIV)
We are bombarded by health information. Unless we are completely disconnected from newspapers, TV, radio and the Internet we know that we should eat more vegetables and fruit, and less meat. We should avoid trans fats and embrace omega 3s. We should walk and not sit. There is no doubt that all these habits will make us feel better and live longer. But there is another aspect to health that is often overlooked. The writer of Proverbs puts his finger on it. We want to trust our own wisdom, what we think we know, for running our lives. That kind of wisdom, the wisdom of our own eyes, can lead us down spiritually and emotionally unhealthy paths. When we trust in God's wisdom and "in all our ways acknowledge him" (verse 6a) we gain a holistic health and the nourishment we need for full lives.
Prayer: God of wisdom, give us a spirit of humility to trust You to lead us where You know we will be healthy and nourished. Amen.
