"By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people." — Exodus 13:21-22 (NIV)
I have not been to the desert nor the wilderness of northern Egypt, but the pictures I have seen show it to be a place of long vistas and vast horizons. A pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire would be seen for many miles in that environment. Such images from the Book of Exodus may make contemporary believers envious of the visible presence of God the Hebrews had as they fled Egypt for the Promised Land. But we do have the same kind of presence of God that can guide us by day and by night. That presence comes to us in God's holy and inspired Word set down in the Bible. God's Word is the pillar that reminds of God's immediate presence in our lives both day and night.
Prayer: Holy God, in Your Word you have given us the pillar we need to guide us in this life. May we turn to it daily to know Your presence with us. Amen.
