National Safe Boating Week is May 17-23, and the National Safe Boating Council and the Johnson City Sail & Power Squadron are encouraging boaters to Wear It!
Because life jackets save lives.
According to the 2012 boating accident statistics compiled by the U.S. Coast Guard, almost 71 percent of all fatal boating accident victims drowned and, of those, almost 85 percent were not reported as wearing a life jacket.
All boaters should wear a life jacket at all times when out on the water.
Boating safety also includes minimizing risks by having a properly equipped boat.
To that end, members of the Johnson City Power Squadron and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be providing a free boat safety inspection on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the TWRA Boat Ramp at Winged Deer Park on Boone Lake.
Vessels that meet the safety requirements will receive a U.S. Coast Guard Inspection sticker.
