WISE — Two people were airlifted to a local hospital Monday afternoon following a head-on collision in Wise County.
The wreck occurred at 12:36 p.m. on Powell Valley Road, a quarter-mile west of the intersection of Country Club Road, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said.
According to state police, witnesses reported seeing a red Ford Mustang GT driven by Ronald G. Trent, 28, of Big Stone Gap, lose control as it was traveling westbound on Powell Valley Road. The Mustang was reportedly entering a turn at the time.
As it rounded the turn, the Mustang reportedly crossed over the center line into the eastbound lane of traffic before striking a Toyota Sequoia driven by Kendra E. Chandler, 22, of Big Stone Gap.
Trent was transported by helicopter to Holston Valley Medical Center, where he is being treated for serious injuries sustained in the accident.
A back-seat passenger in the SUV — identified by police as Betty C. Swinney, 78 — was also airlifted to HVMC. Swinney reportedly suffered serious injuries.
Kendra Chandler and two other passengers in the Toyota — identified as Vicky L. Chandler, 44, and Anita Phillips, 47 — were all taken by ambulance to Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
All three were being treated for serious injuries.
Police said all occupants of the vehicle driven by Chandler were wearing seat belts when the collision occurred. It had still not been determined Monday evening if Trent was wearing a seat belt.
The state police spokeswoman said a preliminary investigation shows speed may have played a factor in the crash.
The investigation of the accident remains ongoing. Charges are likely pending in the case.comments powered by Disqus
