KINGSPORT — This is going to be the summer of paving for Kingsport.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation recently awarded a $4.2 million contract to W&L Construction and Paving for a major resurfacing project along Stone Drive, Center Street and Lynn Garden Drive.

In all, nearly eight miles of roads in Kingsport will soon be getting a fresh layer of asphalt.

The contract calls for the work to be done by Aug. 31. A pre-construction conference with city officials will take place later this month with work starting soon after.

According to Michael Thompson, assistant public works director for the city, the resurfacing work on Stone Drive will run from Fairmont Avenue to just east of Brookside Drive and include all seven lanes plus the shoulders.

Both sides of Stone Drive will also receive three-foot wide bike lanes.
