JOHNSON CITY — Tri Hard Fitness invites kids to "Try a Tri."
The "Try a Tri Kids Triathlon," for youth ages 5 through 15, is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 on the East Tennessee State campus at the Basler Center for Physical Activity, 1244 Jack Vest Drive. The triathlon consists of both individual and group relay events, with age group prizes in 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-year-old divisions.
National participation in the triathlon, the multisport event that includes swimming, biking and running, is at an all-time high, according to Tri Hard Fitness.
"This is a great first-time triathlon for kids. The whole event takes place on campus so it's very safe," organizer Janine Pleasant said in a release. "The relay team is perfect for kids who are a little nervous about one or two aspects of the race to still be able to participate. If they can find a couple of friends and divide up the portions of the race they all will feel a sense of accomplishment and teamwork when they finish."
Distances for each age group are:
5-10 years old
72-yard swim — 3 lengths of pool
1-mile bike — 3 loops of parking lot
0.5-mile run on running path
11-15 years old
144-yard swim — 6 lengths of pool
2-mile bike — 6 loops of parking lot
1-mile run on running path
Packet pickup at the ETSU Basler CPA is from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and 6-7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17. The race begins at 8 a.m.
