"[Jesus said,] 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.' " — John 14:1 (NIV)
The world can be a scary place. We can try to prepare ourselves for every eventuality, but it never fails that some unforeseen calamity occurs that puts us into a tailspin. We do not know where to turn or even how to cope. Perhaps the life passage that troubles us most is the death of loved ones. It is emotionally painful to imagine what life here will be like without these special people to share it with. When death does happen, the heartbreak can be overwhelming. Jesus has told his disciples that he is going to a place where they cannot follow (John 13:33). They are worried and distraught over what this means; they don't know that Jesus is speaking of his death. In the midst of their deep emotional pain, Jesus reminds them that they can trust God and himself. But this was not a one-time promise. Whenever our hearts are troubled and overwhelmed by pain, suffering and grief, we can trust that God will walk with us and will not leave us.
Prayer: Loving God, give us faith to trust You in the midst of the heartbreak and pain of this life. Make us aware of Your abiding presence among us. Amen.
