JONESBOROUGH — Science Hill put up a frantic fight in the top of the seventh inning, but there was no overcoming Christian Bailey.
Bailey drilled a pair of home runs to help stake Dobyns-Bennett to a 6-1 lead and the Tribe held on to beat the Hilltoppers 6-4 on Monday in the winners' bracket final in the District 1-AAA baseball tournament at David Crockett.
Bailey blasted a solo home run in the second inning to put D-B on the board and tomahawked a high fastball over the left-field fence with a man on in the third to put the Indians in firm control of the game.
The Tribe cruised through five innings, outhitting Science Hill 12-2 with just three outs separating D-B from the tournament title game.
But the Hilltoppers weren't finished. Using a patient approach at the plate, Science Hill used a double wedged between a pair of walks to load the bases with nobody out. That ended the night for D-B starter Jeb Lambert and brought on reliever Josh Holt.
But after Holt walked in a run, induced a groundout that allowed another run to score and hit a batter, Logan Gentry was forced to come in and slam the door.
Gentry walked in a run himself before striking out the final two batters he faced to seal the deal.
The Tribe plays Tuesday's winner between Science Hill and Daniel Boone — which face off in the losers' bracket final at 6:30 p.m. — in Wednesday night's title game.
Boone advanced to that contest by beating Tennessee High 6-5 on Monday in a do-or-die game.
The winner of the Science Hill-Daniel Boone game would have to beat D-B twice in order to win the district title.
