SALEM, Va. — The Virginia-Wise softball team's 2014 Mountain East Conference tournament championship was Taylor-made.
Freshman Taylor Brandts pitched the Highland Cavaliers to a 6-2 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at the Moyer Complex, her third win of the tournament.
Named the tournament MVP, Brandts (22-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits in the complete-game effort. She struck out four and walked one.
After the Bobcats (41-12) pushed across one run in the top of the first inning, the Cavs (37-14) answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, punctuated by Megan Dillon's three-run home run.
Virginia-Wise never trailed again. Wesleyan did mount a rally in its final at-bat, but the Bobcats stranded runners on first and second and the Cavs had the tournament title in their first season in the MEC.
Christina Ziemba went 3-for-4 with a run scored, Rachel Fischer was 2-for-3 and Dillon finished with the three RBIs off her first-inning bomb. Ziemba and Fischer joined Brandts on the all-tournament team.
Megan Malenstyn led the Wesleyan offense with two hits and two RBIs. Alex Furr also had two hits.
The Bobcats committed four errors.comments powered by Disqus
