KINGSPORT — It was another day at the office for Sullivan South's Russell Koesters in the Rebels' opening game of the District 1-AA baseball tournament at Dobyns-Bennett on Saturday.
Koesters (7-1) struck out five and scattered seven hits on the mound and blasted a two-run homer at the plate for top-seeded South, which cruised past Elizabethton 8-2.
Koesters finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.
"He's a pitcher who wants the ball in his hands," said South coach Anthony Richardson. "A great kid and a great competitor. He put us in a position for a good start in the tournament."
Happy Valley scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th inning to eliminate Sullivan North 8-7, and in the nightcap, a perfectly executed squeeze play in the bottom of the sixth by Unicoi County propelled the Blue Devils to a 3-2 win over Sullivan East.
Unicoi County will take on South at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in a winners' bracket showdown. The Cyclones dropped into the losers' bracket to face an elimination game Sunday against the winner of the Johnson County and Happy Valley matchup.
