JOHNSON CITY — The East Tennessee Baseball team scored five runs in the third inning and Jimmy Nesselt took care of the rest in an 8-4 win over South Carolina-Upstate in the series opener on Friday at Thomas Stadium.
Nesselt (6-4) tied a career high with eight strikeouts in seven innings to get the win. The junior right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
ETSU (22-22, 9-9 Atlantic Sun) recorded double-digit hits for the ninth time in its last 10 games after out-slugging Upstate 16-9.
Chris Riopedre and Kevin Phillips paced the Buccaneers with three hits each. Riopedre drove in four runs. Phillips extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.
Jeremy Taylor, Tyler Roach, Jordan Sanford and Trey York recorded two hits apiece for the Bucs. Chris Cook pushed his hitting streak to 13 games after ripping a double in the third and scoring one of the five runs in the inning.
Zach Krider was 3-for-4 and Justin Allen knocked in two runs for Upstate (14-31, 4-14).
