KINGSPORT — Sullivan East pitcher Courtney Leonard tossed a shutout through six innings and the Lady Patriots collected a 4-1 win over Johnson County.
Leonard (14-11) didn't allow a run until Demi Blevins, who led off the seventh with a double, was pushed across on a Megan Walters groundout.
Her cause was aided by double plays in the second and sixth innings. She was in danger of falling behind with two outs in the fifth when Cindi Edington cranked a line shot to left with two runners on.
Left fielder Brooke McElyea collided with the fence and reached across to rob Edington of her potential go-ahead bomb.
Lexy Umbarger had two hits and an RBI from the leadoff spot for East (22-18). The Lady Patriots got a single apiece from two through nine in the order, but didn't plate their first run until Umbarger's RBI single in the third frame.
Madeline Standbridge, who'd been hitting a ton for East late in the season, was limited to a lone RBI single. It was atypical of Standbridge, but typical of Johnson County pitcher Briana Snyders' previous dealings with her.
Lady Longhorns coach Dana Smith, whose team has only six wins this season, couldn't help but feel that East was a big one that got away.
Johnson County will face Sullivan North today in a 5 p.m. loser's bracket game.
The Lady Golden Raiders. whose first win of the year was a first-round upset of Sullivan South on Wednesday, were beaten 11-1 in six innings by Happy Valley.
Lady Warriors pitcher Booke Simmons (6-4) collected an abbreviated no-hitter.
Krisley Roberts had an inside the park home run and an RBI double for Happy Valley (20-13). Simmons had two hits, with a double and an RBI.
Kalee Johnson had three hits with a double and an RBI. Emily Whitaker had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Allison Williams had a double and Sydney Puckett and Kaylee Street had a triple apiece.
Sullivan East advances to play Unicoi County at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Happy Valley will face Elizabethton in the 8 p.m. nightcap.comments powered by Disqus
