Raymond B. Mims, left, Bradley J. Hirst
KINGSPORT — Two men were arrested by Kingsport police on Monday for allegedly conspiring to kill another man and his family over a botched drug deal.
Raymond B. Mims, 51, of Blountville, and Bradley J. Hirst, of Newberry, S.C., are both charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to possess more than 10 pounds of marijuana.
According to Kingsport police, Mims and Hirst gave a man whose identity was not released a total of $20,000 to travel to Houston and purchase 50 pounds of marijuana to bring back to Tennessee and sell.
Police said that during the trip, Hirst and the other individual became separated, leaving the unidentified man in sole possession of the $20,000.
The man reportedly told Hirst that he had been robbed during the trip and returned to Kingsport without the drugs or the $20,000.
Police allege that Hirst informed Mims that the man had stolen the money. As a result, Hirst and Mims allegedly formed a plan to kill the man, his wife and the couple's 8-year-old daughter in retribution.
Police said both men were taken into custody before they were able to act on their plans.
Hirst and Mims are currently being held at the Kingsport City Jail pending arraignment.comments powered by Disqus
