This week's Faith in Action photo gallery features photos submitted by Jim Carson, director of missions at Indian Springs Baptist Church. The photos highlight their church's involvement with First Baptist Church in Corinto, Nicaragua.
Through Crosspoint International, Indian Springs Baptist Church entered into a three-year partnership with First Baptist Church in Corinto, Nicaragua, to assist them with rebuilding the church's ministry within their community.
"Watching as the passengers push a bus back onto a muddy, slick road: riding four hours to go twenty miles to teach pastors in the Northeastern region — patience and a sense of humor go a long way in dealing with unexpected challenges. Some of the people that have come to hear the Word have made incredible sacrifices to get to get training," explained Keith Bartley, coordinator for Nicaraguan missions at ISBC.
"There was a woman who came to us for Bible study. She had walked many, many miles, and when we were talking with her, we found out she couldn't even read. But her son could and so she had come to get the materials to give to him so he could teach them to her."
It's important to remember that the impact of and the commitment to the work lasts much longer than the mission trip itself.
"When we go to Nicaragua," says Carson," there is opportunity for all types of skills and gifts -- some teach how to study the Bible, some do construction, others lead in evangelism and Bible study, and others provide training in church leadership, conflict resolution and administration - which is important when working to keep the only local school or church solvent. Even the youth are involved: they create dramas and skits, work with puppets, and hold Vacation Bible Schools and Backyard Bible Clubs. Another popular program that is presented is True Love Waits - an abstinence program which we present because promiscuity is so prevalent in Nicaragua."
