21 car batteries stolen from Blountville towing lot

Police are seeking information on an individual who apparently cut through the fence at a Blountville towing company's storage lot, disabled the surveillance system, and stole batteries from 21 vehicles.

"Many local scrap metal dealers will buy old car batteries, so it is not uncommon for thieves to use this as a way to get some quick cash," said Leslie Earhart, Sullivan County Sheriff's Office public information officer.

According to an incident report at the SCSO, the thefts and vandalism occurred at ACP Towing, 5027 Highway 126. The owner called police late Tuesday night after making the discovery.

No surveillance footage could be obtained by investigators due to the suspect disabling the security system. After doing that, the individual swiped batteries from beneath the hoods of 21 separate vehicles currently held on the premises.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office at (423) 279-7500. Tips can also be made anonymously on the SCSO website.

In particular, police are requesting that area scrap dealers be cognizant of suspicious deposits of multiple batteries.
