BULLS GAP — Jason Welshan's perfect night at Volunteer Speedway was spoiled 23 laps into Saturday night's 40-lap Steel Head feature when a mechanical failure took him out of the race while holding a comfortable lead.

Welshan won the pole for both Crate Late Model and Steel Head races, and was one of only two drivers to hit the 12-second mark on his Steel Head qualifying run (12.809).

Welshan, who led the first 23 laps of the Steel Head feature without a serious challenge, was reaching for his third win in a row in that division.

Ross White, who qualified on the outside of the front row with a time of 12.942, held second place before Welshan's exit.

At the checkered, however, it was Greg Estes who picked up the win. Cory Hedgecock took second with White coming in third.

Warren McMahan finished second in the 30-lap Crate Late Model feature, followed by Tim Byrd.

Polesitter Jamie Whitt took the 25-lap Hobby Modified feature, followed by Parker Estes and Charlie Bates.

The next race on the schedule is Saturday May 10 — "The Carolina Clash" which features a $4,000 to win Super Late model feature, as well as $1,500 to win Steel Heads and Crates.
