Southwest Virginia man to be arraigned in alleged abuse of infant

Jeremy Scott Owens

GATE CITY — A Southwest Virginia man is expected to be arraigned in Scott County Circuit Court Monday on charges stemming from severe abuse he allegedly inflicted on his infant son.

Jeremy Scott Owens, 37, who has addresses listed in both Duffield and Clintwood, is charged with felony malicious wounding and abuse and neglect of a child.

Owens was originally set to appear in court April 16, but the hearing was moved due to the fact Owens is being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority's Haysi facility.

Owens was still located at the Haysi jail Friday afternoon.

He is being held there on a probation violation and a failure to appear capias.

Authorities allege that the abuse inflicted by Owens left the child with a broken leg and multiple broken ribs.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office began investigating the abuse claims on Jan. 5 after the child was taken to Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap for treatment of unspecified injuries. The infant was later transferred to Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City.

Niswonger doctors determined the boy suffered a broken femur and a total of six broken ribs — three on each side.

Owens was arrested by the Johnson City Police Department on Jan. 8 at Niswonger.
