Churches celebrate Easter with sunrise, special services

Easter vigil services

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 Broad St., Kingsport, will observe the Easter Vigil at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 19 with music performed by the children's and youth choirs of Holy Trinity and a drama under the professional direction of Laura Mitchell, a church member.

Easter services

The Greater Kingsport Ministerial Alliance will hold an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m., Sunday, April 20 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 712 E. Sevier Ave., with the message by Elder Charles Hawkins. Breakfast will follow the service.

Cox's Chapel Church will hold a sunrise service at 6 a.m., Sunday, April 20 with breakfast following. Jacob Horton will preach at the 10 a.m. service. No evening service Sunday. A midweek service begins at 7 p.m., Thursdays.

Durham's Chapel Church will hold a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, April 20. Breakfast will follow in the fellowship building. Gorman McMurray will preach at the 6:30 p.m. service.

Salem United Methodist Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church will hold a joint sunrise service at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, April 20 at Immanuel, 191 Central Heights Road, off Highway 11-W, with Pastor Jenny Venable preaching. Breakfast will follow. Salem UMC, corner of Boozy Creek and Bloomingdale roads, will hold services at 8.30 a.m., 10.45 a.m. and 1.30 p.m., Sunday with Pastor Will Shewey preaching. An Easter Sunday meal will follow the 10:45 a.m. service. Donations are accepted.

Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2118 Bloomingdale Road, Kingsport, will hold a sunrise service at 6:45 a.m., Sunday, April 20.

Boones Creek United Methodist Church, 110 Mary St., off Highway 36, will hold a sunrise service at 7 a.m., Sunday, April 20. The church choir will present the musical, "Oh, Happy Day" during the 10:45 a.m. service, Sunday. The 7:30 p.m. service on Wednesday will have the theme "What Now?"

Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church 21503 Benhams Rd. Bristol, Va., will have a Son-Rise service at 7 a.m., Sunday, April 20 with breakfast following in the fellowship hall. Sunday school will begin at 10 a.m., with another worship service at 10:45 a.m. The Bledsoes will sing at 6 p.m., Sunday.

Bible Baptist Church, 246 Hilton St., will hold a sunrise service at 7 a.m., Sunday, April 20 with speaker Jody Jenkins.

Damascus Road Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 284 E. Carters Valley Road, Kingsport, will hold a sunrise service at 7 a.m., Sunday, April 20. Breakfast will follow. A worship service with communion will begin at 11 a.m.

Oak Grove Baptist Church, 311 Cypress St., Mount Carmel, will hold a Resurrection Celebration at 8 a.m., Sunday, April 20 followed by the Believers' Breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday school begins at 9:45 a.m., with worship at 11 a.m.

Sullivan Baptist Church, 4152 Maplewood St., will hold Easter Sunday services at 8:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 6 p.m., Sunday, April 20.

First Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, will hold services at 8:45 and 11 a.m., Sunday, April 20 with the Rev. David Cagle preaching on "Have You Heard the Good News?"

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 Broad St., will celebrate Easter with a service at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 20, featuring music by the combined parish choirs, flutist Martha Egan and organist and director of music Craig Campbell. At 9:30 a.m., Edith Dowd, a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City, will sing a prelude recital in the sanctuary. She will sing works of Bach, Handel, Durufle and Burleigh, accompanied by Campbell, a graduate of The Juilliard School. Dowd is a native of East Tennessee. She performed numerous roles for the New York City Opera during its existence from "The Marriage of Figaro," "The Magic Flute," "La Traviata," "Lucia" and the world premiere of Charles Wourin's "Haroon." Other appearances include the Rhinesburg Festival in Germany, The American Opera Theatre in Bell Ile, France, and The Spoleto Festival in Italy, and with symphony and opera companies in Tokyo, Hungary, Mexico, Tennessee, Arizona, Virginia and Santa Fe.

Cassidy United Methodist Church, 5801 Memorial Blvd., Indian Springs community, will hold a service at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 20. Breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m.

North Kingsport Church of God, 2409 N. John B. Dennis Highway, Kingsport, will hold a Resurrection Celebration during the 11 a.m. service Sunday, April 20. The service will feature a children's choir, special music, an Easter message by Dr. Tim Owen and a gift for everyone.

Norton United Methodist Church, 8th Street at Virginia Avenue, will hold its Easter Sunday service at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 20. The church also leads outreach worship at Mountain View Regional Medical Center at 10 a.m., Sundays.

Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, 2313 Portland Avenue, Bloomingdale area, Kingsport, will hold a service at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 20 in commemoration of the greatest event in the history of the world.
