SW. Va. man arrested for threatening suicide at Wise Courthouse

Brian Rodney Scott

WISE — Crisis negotiators were dispatched to the Wise County Courthouse on Tuesday morning after a Southwest Virginia man reportedly threatened to cut his own throat during court.

Brian Rodney Scott, 48, Apt. 103-G, Old Mill Village, Pound, is being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield following the incident, which reportedly began just before 10 a.m. in Wise County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Wise County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the courtroom after Scott allegedly brandished a folding razor knife and began threatening to commit suicide.

Upon arrival, officers reportedly found Scott in the courtroom holding the knife to his throat. Court security officers reportedly evacuated the room before managing to contain Scott there.

Scott was reportedly subdued after a negotiator with the WCSO Crisis Negotiation Team distracted him so another deputy could deploy a Taser, authorities said.

The Taser incapacitated Scott, allowing officers to disarm him and take him into custody.

Scott was transported to a local hospital for treatment for a superficial laceration to his neck before being released and booked into the Duffield jail.

The WCSO was assisted by the Wise Police Department.
