COEBURN — Lindsay Dean struck out seven and drove in two runs, and Eastside downed visiting J.I. Burton 6-2 on Friday in a Cumberland District softball showdown.
The Lady Spartans, leading 3-2, broke open the game with four hits and three runs in the fourth inning.
The victory moved Eastside (7-1, 4-0) into sole possession of first place in the Cumberland.
Madison Powers had three hits, including a double, for the Lady Spartans, also scoring two runs.
Eastside's stout defense squelched Burton's attempt at a rally in the sixth when the Lady Raiders had runners on first and third with one out. A Burton groundball resulted in a 6-3-2 double play and put out the fire.
"My defense is always there for me," said Dean (7-1). "I knew they'd get me out of trouble."
Kaylee Jones and Deja Stallard had two hits apiece for Eastside.
Asya Goode, one of four freshmen in the starting lineup for Burton (5-6, 4-1), belted a solo home run in the third inning.
Tiffany Cole had five strikeouts on the mound for the Lady Raiders.
