MURFREESBORO — Carl Spivey, a mainstay in Dobyns-Bennett High School athletics, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association during the 2014 TIAAA/TSSAA Athletic Directors Conference.
Spivey has worked and volunteered his time with the D-B athletic department for the past 43 years.
Bobby Chambers, former coach at Tennessee High and the University of Kentucky, lauded Spivey in a release from the TIAAA.
"During my 60-plus years of being around basketball, I have had the opportunity to enter many basketball complexes," Chambers said. "One especially stands out in my mind, the back entrance at Dobyns-Bennett where one very special man was always there to meet and greet you with the same special handshake. He would always ask you how things were going and if he could be of any help.
"In my mind he was Mr. Dobyns-Bennett, my friend Carl Spivey."
Spivey, born on July 14, 1923, and a graduate of D-B, was a turret gunner for the Air Force in World War II. During his three-year enlistment, he flew 62 combat missions in the European theater.
Following the war, Spivey worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement after 41 years of service.
He and his wife, Dot, have been married for 68 years.comments powered by Disqus
