KINGSPORT — Changes are under way for Clinchfield Street.
Tipton Construction began work on Monday near the intersection of Clinchfield and Press streets. The end result will be a reconfigured entrance into the Food City property and the installation of a traffic signal at this intersection.
During construction of the intersection tie-in, one lane of Clinchfield entering the downtown area will be closed approaching Press.
The work is taking place in connection with the Kingsport Carousel Project — the creation of a traditional carousel adjacent to the Kingsport Farmers Market.
Kingsport bought back from Food City the 0.6 acre lot beside the farmers market building for $140,000 earlier this year, with the plan being to close that entrance to the shopping center, build the carousel roundhouse on that site along with a small, adjacent park and playground.
However, before the carousel work takes place, Kingsport has to reconfigure and improve the Clinchfield/Press intersection in accordance with the land deal with Food City.
