ROGERSVILLE — The good news is that the Internal Revenue Service has agreed to cut a fine levied on Hawkins County Schools last year by almost $70,000.
The bad news is the county still has a total IRS fine stemming from two separate violations of more than $90,000.
In November of 2012 the Hawkins County School System's former finance director failed to make a $629,000 payment to the Internal Revenue Service for school employee federal withholdings.
As a result of that missed payment, the IRS fined Hawkins County Schools $130,169.
The former finance director then failed to make the IRS payment again in March of 2013 which resulted in another $30,000 IRS fine for the county school system.
The employee responsible was fired after the mistakes were discovered.
