Volunteer names Greg Barnett boys varsity basketball coach

CHURCH HILL — Volunteer athletic director Jim Whalen announced on Wednesday that Greg Barnett has been named the boys varsity basketball coach for the Falcons.

Barnett, who replaces Chris Brown who left Volunteer to become the boys coach at Daniel Boone, has been the junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach for the Falcons since 2007.

"I'm excited and thankful for the opportunity," said Barnett. "This is something that I've been working for over the past several years.

"What's nice is that I've coached so many of these kids in our JV program," added Barnett. "That should make the transition easier for both me and the kids. They know my style and are familiar with my coach-player interaction.

"We have a good group of seniors coming back and I feel confident we'll find the pieces of the puzzle to fit around them."

Whalen was upbeat about the hire.

"I'm excited for Greg," said Whalen. "This will be a very smooth transition for us. Greg is an intense coach and his players love him."

Barnett played his high school basketball at Sullivan East under John Dyer. He moved on to Tusculum College and played from 1994-98.

Competing in the always demanding Big 7 Conference will be the challenge.

"When you have to go up against teams like Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett it's an uphill battle," added Barnett. "But I believe we can be competitive."

Additionally, Barnett has directed the Volunteer summer basketball camp since 2010.
