BLOUNTVILLE — Early voting for May 6 party primaries begins in two weeks. The last day to register to vote is Monday.

The general election ballot is not until August, but the race for Sullivan County mayor will be decided on May 6 in the Republican Party primary.

That's because the only two candidates for county mayor are running for the GOP nomination.

And the primary winner looks to have a lock on the $105,000 per year job, with no one running as a Democrat or independent.

Steve Godsey is seeking the GOP nomination to run for a third term as county mayor, having first come to the office in 2006 — the year his predecessor, Richard Venable, chose not to run for re-election to the mayor's office.

For the past seven years, Venable has been at the helm of the countywide economic development organization NETWORKS Sullivan Partnership, serving as president and CEO until the end of 2013.
