Phyl's of Bristol gearing up for Sunset Shopping

Looking for a unique gift for a 6-month-old, an 80-year-old, or someone in between? Downtown Bristol has the perfect shop to cover all of your gift buying needs, and you'll probably leave with something for yourself.

Phyl's of Bristol has a wide array of toys, fun collegiate items, beautiful collectible pieces and spring outdoor garden decorations.

Originally established in Wise, Va., by Phyllis Prince in the early 1990s, the store has been in downtown Bristol for almost a year now. Cindy Timp, Phyllis' daughter and a preschool special needs teacher, became a partner in 2007, and granddaughter Katie helps out when she's not working as an occupational therapist.

Cindy said their charming location on State Street, with exposed brick and a cozy feel, goes along with their store's theme of unique gift items. "Downtown has been a perfect fit for our store."

A convenient time to visit Phyl's will be during the upcoming Sunset Shopping in Bristol, which starts on Thursday, April 3, and continues every Thursday through October. Downtown stores will stay open extended hours from 5 to 8 p.m., and Phyl's is offering 20 percent off merchandise during the Sunset Shopping Kickoff Celebration.

This family-owned business has maintained a high standard in customer service since first opening the store. Phyl's offers free gift-wrapping, and educators receive a 10 percent discount. They also provide a layaway option, because Cindy said her mom, Phyllis, "wants to give everyone an opportunity to purchase the items we sell.

If you are looking to show off your team colors and spruce up your outside area this spring, there are collegiate bird baths, a wide selection of collegiate garden statues, along with yard/house flags. Phyl's family consists of Virginia Tech alumni members, but don't worry, they have a large collegiate selection to please almost everyone.

Displayed in the front of the store is a wide array of collectibles from "The Wizard of Oz," celebrating its 75th anniversary, and "Gone With The Wind."

Brightly-colored outside and beach toys by Sunny Patch are perfect for the upcoming season. In addition, puzzles and art supplies by Melissa and Doug are available at Phyl's, along with Schylling toy products and Usborne books. The store also carries Thomas the Train and Chuggington brand trains which can be found near the in-store train table.

"Children are always welcome to play with the train table," said Cindy. "We enjoy making toy recommendations for particular age groups and on educational toys that develop a variety of fine motor and cognitive skills."

Phyl's is also a large dealer of collector's items from sought-after brands like Lenox, Jim Shore and San Francisco Music Box, as well as doll lines from Madame Alexander, Adora and Lee Middleton. Novelties like doll furniture and houses, and a collection of large-sized stuffed animals are also located throughout the store.

Don't forget to enjoy Sunset Shopping in Bristol by stopping by Phyl's for all your gift and seasonal needs.
