KINGSPORT — Each Saturday morning in April, the Kingsport Aquatic Center will offer free water safety classes for parents and children.
Course instruction, which will be held from 10-11 a.m., will cover the following topics:
Saturday, April 5: General Water Safety
Saturday, April 12: Boating Safety
Saturday, April 19: Home Pool Safety
Saturday, April 26: Personal Water Safety
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages one to 14 years," KAC Director Kari Matheney said in a release. "Drowning happens quickly and suddenly, and any source of water is a potential drowning hazard, especially for young children and weak swimmers."
With warm weather just around the corner, the classes come at an opportune time.
"As we prepare for another swimming and boating season, now is the time to focus on water safety," Matheney said. "These short workshops are open to members and nonmembers, and we encourage parents and children to don a swimsuit and join us for a time of important instruction and some fun in the water."
