Charles A. Samples, 29
A Kingsport police officer received "significant facial injuries" while arresting a vandalism suspect over the weekend, as the man allegedly headbutted and threatened to kill him, garnering felony charges.
According to Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton, the incident began with a Friday afternoon call at a Kingsport residence. The victim said her ex-husband had arrived and wanted custody of their child for the weekend, but his request was denied due to him having an outstanding warrant for failure to pay child support.
The suspect, Charles A. Samples, 29, of 1551 Waverly Road, allegedly became "enraged" and punched the woman's car several times, leaving a large dent in a rear quarter panel. He then left the home and was later located by police at his mother's residence.
Samples was taken into custody for the outstanding child support warrant out of Sullivan County, along with additional charges of vandalism at his ex-wife's Kingsport home.
A KPD press release says Samples initially complied with the arresting officer, but while being escorted out of the residence he "suddenly and violently lunged his head backward into the officer's face."
The back of Samples' head reportedly struck the officer's nose, inflicting what police call "significant" facial injuries. The officer received treatment at the hospital and has since returned to duty.
Besides being charged with aggravated assault for allegedly attacking the officer, Samples is also alleged to have threatened to kill him. That prompted an additional felony charge of retaliation for past actions. Samples was booked into the city jail.
