Timothy Jacob Gardner, 29

KINGSPORT — Police say they have arrested a man who asked for change inside a Mexican restaurant, then snatched cash from the register and fled the scene.

According to a Kingsport Police Department press release, the incident occurred at approximately 2:15 Tuesday afternoon at Molcajetes Mexican Grill, 504 West Stone Drive. The suspect, later identified as Timothy Jacob Gardner, 29, reportedly entered the restaurant and asked for change.

When an employee opened the register, Gardner allegedly grabbed an undisclosed amount of money. Police say he then ran out of the restaurant, entered a Ford Mustang and drove away.

Shortly thereafter, police located the car parked outside a nearby mobile home on Fairview Avenue. Gardner was reportedly apprehended at the residence and positively identified as the suspect.

Gardner, who police say is currently homeless, was arrested and charged with theft of less than $500 and booked into the city jail.
