SURGOINSVILLE — The Hawkins County Republican Party's candidate forum Tuesday evening may be a bit more interesting thanks to a flier distributed by county mayor candidate Dennis Deal. The flier is highly critical of incumbent Melville Bailey.
Cecile Testerman, county GOP chairwoman, said Sunday that in light of Deal's flier, there will be a law enforcement presence at the forum, which is being hosted by Surgoinsville Middle School beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The flier, which was widely circulated in Hawkins County on Friday by Deal is titled "A case of incompetence; A cause for change."
In the flier, Deal questions Bailey's budgeting skills, criticizes him for failing to break the County Commission's 10-10 tie when choosing between James Taylor and Buddy Baird to fill the sessions judge vacancy and derides him for failing to work with commissioners seeking more affordable health insurance for county employees.
On Sunday, the Times-News contacted Bailey, who said he is sure that law enforcement won't be necessary at Tuesday's forum, at least not on his account, although he does plan to address Deal's flier during the forum.
