"'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May it be to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her." — Luke 1:38 (NIV)
It's nine months until Christmas! That's why many churches acknowledge March 25 as the Annunciation of our Lord. It remembers the, recorded in the Gospel of Luke, when Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would give birth to Jesus, the "Son of the Most High."
Most women, when they first hear the news confirming that they are pregnant, greet the news with a mix of excitement and trepidation and joy. And usually these women already have an idea that they might be pregnant. For Mary, Gabriel's announcement was completely out of the blue. Yet Mary greets it with humility and peace. Her reaction and her acceptance of being the mother of the Messiah model for all Christians of a holy life.
God acts and gives us faith to walk with God into a new adventure of service and love. May we, too, be the Lord's servants bearing Christ into the world.
Prayer: Faithful God, You enter our lives and fill us with grace. Give us humility to follow and serve You all our days. Amen.
