Tenn. cemetery worker charged with taking grave markers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Memphis cemetery employee has been charged with stealing dozens of bronze grave markers and vases and selling them for more than $5,000.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Monday that 30-year-old Michael Carter was indicted on felony theft charges. Weirich's office said Carter is an employee at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Carter is accused of stealing 31 bronze grave marker name plates and 86 bronze vases from the cemetery and selling them in July to a recycling company for $5,458. Prosecutors said the actual value of the items was more than $10,000.

Carter is free on bond.
