KINGSPORT — Sullivan County authorities believe a domestic situation played a role in a double shooting in Kingsport Friday afternoon that left a woman dead and her husband in critical condition.
Edith Neeley, 20, 312 New Summerville Road Lot 16, was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting, a Sullivan County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
Her husband, Ricky Neeley, 22, same address, was listed in critical condition Friday night at Holston Valley Medical Center, where he is being treated for gunshot wounds.
Two children under the age of two who were in the home when the shooting occurred have been placed by the Department of Children's Services with family members, authorities said.
SCSO investigators believe the shooting was sparked by a "domestic situation" that involved the husband and wife.
Deputies arrived at 312 New Summerville Road around 2:30 p.m. to find both Edith and Ricky Neeley inside their home with gunshot wounds. SCSO detectives were then called to the scene to begin their investigation, which remains ongoing.
Officers at the scene told the Times-News that they weren't sure at the time who fired the weapon. Authorities said they believed a single handgun was used in the shooting.
Authorities declined to release further details on the shooting Friday night since investigators were still in the process of collecting evidence.
An autopsy will reportedly be conducted on Edith Neeley's body, authorities said.
