Man allegedly displays gun at Kingsport restaurant

Harold D. Fitch

A dispute in the parking lot of a Kingsport restaurant has prompted the arrest of a man on charges of aggravated assault, as he allegedly pointed a gun at a coworker.

Harold D. Fitch, 40, of 1409 Prospect Drive, Kingsport, was arrested Sunday afternoon following the altercation. A Kingsport Police Department incident report says it occurred in the parking lot of his employer, a restaurant in the 1200 block of East Stone Drive.

According to statements included in the police report, a coworker of Finch approached him about a missing cell phone charger. Fitch was reportedly seated inside his vehicle outside the restaurant when questioned about the item, and told police that the other man threatened to punch him in the face.

At that point, according to Fitch, he feared being attacked, leading him to pull a handgun from his glove box and begin to chamber a round. He said at that point the other man walked away.

The alleged victim confirmed confronting Finch about the charger, saying Fitch leaned out the window of his vehicle and cursed him. Growing agitated, the victim admitted to asking Fitch, "Do you want me to punch you in the face?"

The victim said Fitch then removed the gun from his glove box and pointed it his direction, prompting him to run inside and notify his boss of the incident.

When police arrived Fitch was still inside his vehicle, and gave police permission to remove the handgun from the glove box. An arrest report says the weapon had a loaded magazine, with no round in the chamber.

Fitch was arrested and booked into the city jail on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a prohibited weapon.
