Three get court dates in Alcoa mushroom growing case

MARYVILLE — Court dates have been set for three Tennessee people charged with growing hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The Daily Times reported that Alcoa residents 38-year-old Charity N. Powell and 59-year-old Walteena H. Shelby are scheduled for arraignment March 26. The third person, 37-yearold Michael S. Spencer of Alcoa, is due for an appearance on March 26.

Spencer is free on $25,000 bond. Powell and Selby posted $35,000 bond.

Police arrested the trio Feb. 29 and charged them with manufacturing hallucinogenic mushrooms in a drug-free zone.

Spencer will be appointed a public defender.

It was not immediately known if Powell and Selby would be seeking to hire their own attorneys, or if they would be appointed public defenders.
