Admitting powerlessness: Devotion for March 15, 2014

"'For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one "Go," and he goes; and that one, "Come," and he comes. I say to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.' When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him." — Luke 7:8-9a (NIV)

A centurion, who commands power and authority, is powerless in the face of his servant's illness. So he seeks out Jesus, whom he has come to believe has the power and authority over what is causing his servant's illness in the same way he has power over his soldiers. It is in those situations in life when we lose our power to control the situation that we recognize that we need to turn to Someone who does have that power. May our hearts be as willing to admit our powerlessness as the centurion was.

Prayer: Loving God, spur us to trust in Your unfailing power and authority over all that would keep us from living the life You desire for us. Amen.
