UPDATE: Lee County authorities conduct roundup of drug suspects

JONESVILLE — Law enforcement officers fanned out across Lee County Friday morning to begin arresting over three dozen suspects as part of a large-scale drug roundup.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said 37 individuals were being sought on a total of 99 charges that ranged from selling painkillers to manufacturing methamphetamines.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, 29 of those suspect had been taken into custody, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

A Lee County grand jury returned sealed indictments on the suspects Wednesday.

Parsons said the indictments followed a year-long investigation carried out by the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Lee County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the Pennington Gap Police Department and members of the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force.

The operation, Parsons said, is designed to combat drug abuse, which he described as one of the major problems facing the area.

"I know the public gets frustrated knowing that there are people they know are dealing drugs and seem to never get caught," Parsons said. "We in law enforcement do as well, but we have to put together a case that can be won in court and that takes time and man power. I assure you we are doing everything possible to take dealers off the streets. Sooner or later, they are going down."

The investigation is ongoing, Parsons said, with authorities planning to seek additional indictments on drug-related offenses in the future.

Parsons commended the work of the agencies involved in the investigation.
