Support groups for those dealing with grief, serious medical conditions

Grief support

Grief Recovery support six-week sessions, 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays at First Broad Street United Methodist Church parlor. Free. In a time of grief it is important to have support to bring healing and reconciliation to the reality of the death of a loved one. Facilitated by John Wilson, retired hospice chaplain at 3 p.m., and by Ann VandeVate, grief counselor, at 5:30 p.m. “Understanding Your Grief,” by Dr. Alan Wolfelt will be provided by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes for free. “A Mindful Journey Through Grief: Grief Recovery Support in the Tri-Cities Community,” will be offered from 6:30-8 p.m., Mondays for 10 weeks, beginning Feb. 24 at the The Appalachian Dharma & Meditation Center, 108 W. 10th Ave., Suite 3, Johnson City. Compassionate Friends of TennVa, a grief support group for parents, 2 p.m., second Sunday, Bristol Public Library, corner of Piedmont Avenue and Goode Street, Bristol, Va. Assisting families toward a positive personal acceptance of grief following the death of a child of any age and providing information to help others be supportive.
Compassionate Friends of Tennessee Valley, 6 p.m., third Tuesday, Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, 128 W. Main St., Jonesborough.

Survivors of Suicide Support Group — Tri-Cities 6 p.m., fourth Monday, Boones Creek Christian Church, Entrance K. SOS is for those who have lost someone by suicide, are interested in suicide prevention or might have helpful information for those who do. Call at 361-2087.

Mountain Empire Aspies, a support/social group for adults with Asperger’s syndrome, PDD/NOS and high-functioning autism, meets monthly near the ETSU campus, Johnson City, with plans to expand to Kingsport. Email mtnempireaspies@gmail.com. The group is moderated by its members.
