KINGSPORT — Local opera singer Tatum Spears will soon take her talents to the City of Brotherly Love after being chosen to participate in the Russian Opera Workshop this July in Philadelphia.
Spears, a Weber City native who is currently a senior at East Tennessee State University, will play Tatyana in a production of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.”
Spears, 22, said she was thrilled to be offered the lead role.
“I will perform the role in a safe environment with professionals and colleagues who will support me and help me grow,” Spears said. The Russian language is a very difficult one to grasp, so it’s a little intimidating. But I am ready to accept the challenge in a thrilling, friendly environment.”
Established in 2011, the workshop gives young opera singers the opportunity to learn and perform roles in Russian, Spears said.
By taking part, Spears said she will have the opportunity to work with founder Ghenady Meirson, who serves as a faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts and the Curtis Institute of Music, both located in Philadelphia.
