“Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” — Romans 8:5 (NIV)
In this part of his letter to the Christians living in Rome, Paul sounds like he is talking about two kinds of people. The truth is Paul is talking about every human being. Each of us has a desire to live out lives according to our baser natures — anger when someone cuts us off in traffic, jealousy when a colleague gets the raise we expected, bitterness over the way life has played out. But when God claims us as His own children, He gives us the Spirit and the desires of the Spirit. With the desires of the Spirit, God also gives us the ability to see the people around us the way God sees them and to reach out to them not in anger, jealousy or bitterness but with love, kindness and patience.
Prayer: Holy God, open my eyes to see the world as You see it. Open my ears to hear the cries of those in need. Open my hands to be Your hands in a hurting world. Amen.
