UPDATE: Four Ketron Elementary students taken to hospital following bus accident

Updated at 8:15 p.m.

KINGSPORT — Four elementary school students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries following an accident Monday afternoon that involved a Sullivan County school bus.

The incident occurred on Newland Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. near Ketron Elementary School in Bloomingdale, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart said.

School officials reportedly told authorities that the bus driver was making a left-hand turn from Cardinal Street to Newland Avenue when the incident took place.

Earhart said a wheel dropped off the side of the road as the bus was making the turn onto Newland.

Several students riding the bus reportedly received minor injuries, with three being transported by Sullivan County EMS to Holston Valley Medical Center as a precaution.

Director of Schools Jubal Yennie said a parent took a fourth student to a local hospital, also as a precaution.

School officials said a total of 13 students were on the bus at the time the accident took place.

Yennie said the bus returned students to Ketron after the incident and they were taken to the gym. But he said proper protocol was for the bus to have waited for emergency responders.

Earhart said the sheriff’s office investigation is ongoing, and Yennie said charges could be pending after a review by the district attorney.

The incident was the second involving a Sullivan County school bus in the last week.

On Thursday, 21 students were sent to two area hospitals with minor injuries after a student reportedly pulled an emergency window latch and activated an alarm that distracted a bus driver, triggering a two-bus crash.

That crash occurred in the 3000 block of Bloomingdale Road.

Yennie said Monday’s incident was a different route involving a different driver and different bus contractor than the Thursday accident.

Staff Writer Rick Wagner contributed to this report.
