KINGSPORT — Based on parent comments at Friday’s inaugural Lunch with Lyle event, the city school system would be well served doing a joint facilities study with Sullivan County.
Adams Elementary parent Kathy Fields asked Ailshie at the informal meeting of about 20 people about hiring extra teachers for Adams, since 80 students are in four kindergarten classes there but the school has only three first grade and two second grade teachers.
Ailshie said those needs will be addressed in the 2014-15 school budget but that more unforeseen enrollment shifts, including some for annexed areas, are harder to project.
Adams is the only school in the system that is not at 90 percent or more operational capacity, he said.
Ailshie explained that human resources head Tammie Davis keeps up with enrollment projections and projected class sizes via spreadsheet.
Five teachers were added systemwide for enrollment growth, and two more were funded through fund balance.
