CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Southwest Virginia was well represented when the 2013 VHSL Group 1A All-State Football Team was released Friday by the VHSL. Two players from Clintwood, one from J.I. Burton and three from Haysi made the honorary squad.
Senior Matthew Jones (defensive lineman) and junior Austin Turner (punt returner) of Clintwood, Burton senior Kelly Thompson (running back), and senior Jeffery Bowen (running back), senior Tanner O'Quinn (receiver) and junior Tristan Yates (linebacker) of Haysi were named all-state.
The 1A team was comprised of 16 seniors and 14 juniors. State runner-up Essex placed six players on the all-state squad, state champion Altavista had five players chosen and Franklin had four.
The VHSL all-state football teams are selected in each classification in which there is a state championship. Each selection committee is composed of eight football coaches (four from each region), and two athletic directors/directors of student activities (one from each region), and each region group/classification has its own committee.
Only those athletes selected to all-region teams are eligible for selection to the all-state team.comments powered by Disqus
