Suspect arrested in Blountville pharmacy robbery

Wendell Wayne Buchanan, 51

Police say they have arrested the man who recently claimed to have a gun at a Blountville pharmacy, threatening to kill employees unless he was given drugs.

Wendell Wayne Buchanan, 51, address provided as Highway 75 in Blountville, was apprehended Wednesday evening. He is charged with aggravated robbery and theft over $500.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 7 at Blountville Drug Company, 3090 Highway 126. A man reportedly walked in and handed an employee a list of medications, mostly painkillers, then forced his way behind the counter while claiming to be armed with a gun.

According to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, the suspect demanded the pharmacist give him the drugs on the list, with failure to do so resulting in everyone being killed. After obtaining the medications, he fled.

The SCSO says detectives working the case received new information last week, identifying Buchanan as the suspect. His vehicle was located at the home of a relative in Johnson City, with police then obtaining a warrant to conduct a search on Wednesday.

Inside the car, officers reportedly located evidence that spurred Buchanan being charged in the robbery. He was arrested and transported to the Sullivan County jail in Blountville.
