Facilities study to be focus when Kingsport, Sullivan BOEs meet

KINGSPORT — The Sullivan County and Kingsport school boards are set to meet jointly next week to address a long-discussed joint facilities study.

The county and city boards of education are to meet in a non-voting work session at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the Domtar Cabin to discuss the facilities planning process.

“It’s going to be informal,” Sullivan County Director of Schools Jubal Yennie said Monday. “We’ve (city and county school officials) had some pretty good conversations.”

City schools chief information officer Andy True Monday said city Superintendent Lyle Ailshie is optimistic about the meeting.

“He wanted to stress his optimism that next week will provide an opportunity for both boards to work together to move forward in a way that will benefit all students in the community,” True said in an emailed statement. “He is very optimistic that the facilities study will be a good platform to find common ground and collaborate together.”

Two basic issues are on the table: whether the two systems will collaborate on a facilities study and, if so, how fully the city would participate in the study.
