“For In Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” — Galatians 5:6 (NIV)
We desperately want to do something, anything, to prove ourselves worthy before God. For the Galatians, who were influenced by Jewish Christians who came to the region after Paul’s departure, that “something” became circumcision, the ancient Jewish rite commanded by God to mark Abraham and his descendants as the chosen people. But Paul reminds the Galatians in this letter that, because of Jesus, all our human striving will come to naught. All we need is faith. When we humbly receive faith then we have all we need to do good in the world — not to impress God, but to serve and love others.
Prayer: Holy God, turn our hearts in faith toward You so that we may put away all our human striving and know that, through Your Son, Jesus, all has been accomplished. We can now live out lives as Your children loving one another. Amen.
