BIG STONE GAP — Sophomore post Jake Barnett scored 10 of his team-leading 16 points in the fourth quarter and Union held off treacherous Thomas Walker 55-47 in a non-district basketball rematch Tuesday.
The Bears (11-10) collected a regular-season sweep of the Pioneers (12-9), who will not cross paths with Union in the postseason. The Bears escaped with a 56-54 win in the first meeting at Ewing.
On an uncharacteristically quiet night from Logan Schoolcraft, who finished with six points, Zack Barker also stepped up in the post with 10.
Guard Desmond Burney, who grinned and fist-pumped on the floor when the announcer proclaimed that school would let out early Wednesday, added 10 points for the Bears. Burney grabbed eight rebounds despite giving up considerable length to Thomas Walker.
Zack Bailey hit four of the Pioneers’ nine 3-pointers on his way to a team-leading 12 points, Hunter Cope added 10 points, also grabbing seven rebounds for Thomas Walker (12-9).
In the girls’ game, Hannah Dysart drained four treys en route to 18 points and the Lady Bears mauled the Lady Pioneers 62-33.
Summer Begley scored 11 for Union (9-12) and McKenna Tankersley added 10.
Morgan White fired up 12 points to pace Thomas Walker (6-14).
