Police arrest suspect in Kingsport kidnapping, robbery

KINGSPORT — Police have arrested a man wanted in multiple felonies — including the armed robbery of a man who was  hogtied and the burglary of several cars while their owners were attending church.

Rodney Ray "Baby Ray" Gilbert, 37, was apprehended without incident Tuesday morning at Stratford Inn, 1708 East Stone Drive. On Friday, the Kingsport Police Department sent out a press release outlining Gilbert's alleged month-long crime spree and asking for the public's assistance in locating him.

On Jan. 4, Gilbert and an accomplice, whom police have not identified, allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint in an apartment on Teasel Drive. Police say the victim was hogtied in the incident and robbed of both cash and personal property.

Eight days later, according to police, Gilbert broke into three vehicles parked along Stonebrook Place as their owners were reportedly worshiping in a nearby church and took personal property from the automobiles.

Gilbert is also charged in a felony shoplifting incident that occurred on Feb. 4. Kingsport police say that on that day he stole $1,300 in camping equipment from Walmart on West Stone Drive.

Gilbert, address provided as 1022 Reedy Place, is currently held in the Kingsport city jail without bond. He is charged with kidnapping,aggravated robbery, three counts of auto burglary, two counts of theft of more than $1,000 and two counts of vandalism.
