Hiring Our Heroes hiring event set for April 2

February 11th, 2014 10:10 am by Lennie Gail Dunlop

ABINGDON —The Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing (SVAM) will host the 1st Annual HIRING OUR HEROES hiring event on April 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator, 851 French Moore Jr. Boulevard in Abingdon.

Pre-qualified veterans and service members will have an opportunity to interview for open positions with employers located in the southwest Virginia region.

The goal of the hiring event is to connect veterans and service members with employers in the Southwest Virginia region. Pre-qualified veterans and service members will be invited to the event where they will be interviewed by area employers, primarily in the manufacturing industry, with open positions.

Veterans and service members must attend a free, half day class that will cover Workplace Expectations, Interview Preparation, Resume Development and a Drug Screen in order to be pre-qualified. The class will act as a refresher while communicating with employers that the veterans and service members are “ready-to-hire.” Information regarding class dates and locations can be obtained at www.swvam.org. Employers, with open positions, are encouraged to contact Lennie Gail Dunlop to learn how to participate in this very special event.

"In the course of their service to our country, veterans and service members have learned valuable skills and developed the soft skills and work ethic that any employer would want in an employee. We can never fully repay the men and women who served our country so bravely and so selflessly. Here, in Southwest Virginia, we are committed to being there for our veterans and service members as they have been there for us," said Lennie Gail Dunlop, SVAM program director. "I want to thank all the partners who have worked closely to put this hiring event and classes together."

The hiring event is a follow-up to Hiring Our Heroes Part 1 Conference for Employers which was held in November 2013. SVAM invited employers and veteran-related organizations to a day of learning in order to increase employers’ knowledge and awareness about the benefits of hiring veterans and service members. The information presented to employers focused on the soft skills instilled in service members such as timeliness, motivation, showing of respect for authority, discipline, teamwork, and problem solving skills.

“The Hiring Our Heroes initiative enables SVAM to help facilitate the introduction of a skilled workforce that possesses these valuable soft skills to our members and other employers with open positions,” said Lennie Gail Dunlop.
